CT Scan: Detailed Insights into Your Body

Updated: Jul 17

CT scans provide doctors with a detailed view inside your body, helping them diagnose various medical conditions, plan treatments, and monitor progress. Here are five key facts to help you prepare for your CT scan at Prime Diagnostic Centre. For scheduling, talk to your care provider or contact us directly.

1. A CT Scan Takes Images in Slices

CT scans use ionising radiation to create detailed images from multiple angles, forming "slices" that combine into a comprehensive image. These scans are useful for locating tumors, checking for internal bleeding, planning surgeries, and monitoring treatments. "CT" stands for computerized tomography, with "tomography" derived from the Greek word "tomos," meaning "slice" or "section."

2. The Scanner Looks Like a Large Ring or Donut

During a CT scan, you'll lie on a table that slides into the bore (hole) of the CT machine, which resembles a large ring or donut. The internal parts of the machine spin around you, making loud whirring noises. A radiographer will guide you through the procedure.

3. During the Scan, You’ll Have to Stay Still

To avoid blurry images, you must stay as still as possible during the scan. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly, depending on the scan's focus. The procedure can take from a few minutes to an hour, and you can communicate with the technologist via an intercom system if needed.

4. Some CTs Require the Use of Contrast Dye

In some cases, you may need to take a contrast dye orally or intravenously, which helps enhance the images. This can extend the procedure time to allow the dye to circulate through your body.

5. CT Scans Use Radiation, Like Traditional X-Rays

CT scans involve radiation, which in large doses can increase cancer risk. However, the risk from a single CT scan is very low. Your doctor will have weighed the benefits against the risks before recommending the scan. Discuss any concerns about radiation with your doctor, and ask about alternative imaging exams if necessary.
